The Moment That Changed Everything

I needed a simple API endpoint to fetch a list of users. What Claude returned had a BaseRepository, a UserService, dependency injection chains, and abstract base classes I'd maintain forever.

What I actually needed:

Six lines. Claude wasn't wrong — the code was solid. But it was solving a problem I didn't have. That's the over-engineering trap, and it happens across every language and framework.

Vague prompt → over-engineered output. Specific prompt → clean output.

Plan Architecture Before Writing Code

The biggest shift in my workflow was using Claude for architecture planning first. Describe the system, the expected load, and your stack — then map out services, data flows, and where complexity is actually justified.

Start with a plain-English feature plan

Ask for a folder structure and endpoint list. No code yet — just alignment on what needs to be built.

Ask Claude to evaluate trade-offs

Monolith vs microservices, REST vs event-driven, SQL vs NoSQL. Claude is excellent at this when you give it real context.

Define schemas and contracts first

Data models and API schemas are the contract — everything else follows and stays consistent.

You decide when to add complexity

Some modules genuinely need a service layer. But you make that call — add structure only when the problem demands it.

The Prompt That Fixes 80% of Over-Engineering

Tell Claude exactly how simple you want things. One habit, massive difference.

Instead of saying…	Say this instead

Write a [language/framework] [endpoint/function/service] for [task].

Stack: [your stack here]
Scope: Simple and direct — no unnecessary abstraction
Do NOT include: repository pattern / service layer / base classes
Error handling: Basic only
Keep it: Readable by a junior developer

Ask Claude to Simplify, Not Just Review

Most developers use Claude to find bugs. I also use it to cut unnecessary complexity — that's where I get the most value.

"Review this code. Flag anything that adds complexity without real value. Suggest the simplest version that still works correctly in production."

⚠ Over-Engineering Patterns to Catch

Abstract base classes and generic repositories for simple CRUD
Service layers on top of service layers for a 3-table app
Custom exception hierarchies when a simple error response works
Middleware for things the framework already handles natively
Separate folders for repositories/, services/, schemas/, mappers/ before the app has grown into needing them

Testing Without the Bloat

Claude can generate comprehensive test suites — but left to its defaults, it'll add test classes and fixture factories you don't need. Apply the same scoping discipline.

"Write tests for this [endpoint/function].
Happy path, invalid input, not found, unauthorized.
Plain functions only — no test class hierarchies.
Mock external dependencies with simple stubs."

After generation, ask: "What edge cases am I actually missing that matter in production? List only the ones worth testing." — that keeps coverage thorough without turning the test file into a novel.

Debugging — Where Claude Saves the Most Time

Paste the error, the relevant code, and what you expected vs. what happened. Claude almost always pinpoints the issue on the first response.

Cryptic ORM or database driver errors translated into plain English
N+1 query problems buried in nested loops
Race conditions in async code and missing await calls
Auth and middleware ordering issues
Misconfigured environment variables and connection pooling bugs

Three Rules I Now Code By

Prompt like you're briefing a fast but very literal developer.

The more specific your prompt, the less cleanup you do. Treat it like a technical spec, not a chat message.

Keep backend code as simple as the problem allows.

Complexity is a cost. Add it deliberately when the problem earns it — not because the AI defaults to it.

Claude writes the code. You own the architecture.

Use it to move fast and think clearly. Never let it make your structural decisions for you.

Prompt clearly. Review critically. Ship confidently.
